Big Tech’s race to develop artificial intelligence has become a lucrative opportunity for energy companies, many of which have rushed forward with project announcements in the last few months to supply electricity to new data centers.
In fact, excitement about electricity demand growth has taken over the energy industry, which has traditionally been focused on oil and gas.
“(Electric) power has never been sexy, right? And it is now sexy,” Lynda Clemmons, chief sustainability officer for Houston-based NRG Energy, said during a panel at the CERAWeek by S&P Global conference two weeks ago. “The energy growth that we’re going to see in Texas from (electricity consumer) demand, 56 gigawatts, that’s like layering California on top of Texas.”
